Press release for the Harrogate Advertiser 13 July 2009 PUPILS’ BRUSH WITH SUCCESS SETS HIGH STANDARDS AT BARBER TITLEYS ART COMPETITION LAND and seascapes depicting Yorkshire scenery, ranging from the East Coast to Harrogate’s Valley Gardens, were among winners of a summer art competition entered by dozens of North Yorkshire pupils.
The winners, chosen from 23 finalists selected by staff at Harrogate solicitors, Barber Titleys, which organised and sponsored the competition, judged by Harrogate artist Neil Simone and managing director of Harrogate art and craft and stationers, Jespers, Peter Jesper, were Elizabeth Owen, ten, of St Joseph’s Primary School, Harrogate and Adam Tetley, seven, of Moorside School, Ripon.

Elizabeth Owen won the category for pupils aged between nine and 12 with her painting of Whitby seaside. Judge Peter Jesper said: “Elizabeth’s composition really captures a sense of Whitby. I like how the textures and colours show the mood of the seaside.”
![]() Neil Simone, who judged the category for pupils aged between five and eight, selected Adam Tetley’s striking countryside scene saying: “This shows good originality. I like the composition and mixture of painting with collage which was done well and really stood out from the others.”
![]() Both received a set of Derwent artist supplies, a £30 voucher to spend on art and craft materials at Jespers of Harrogate as well as a copy of Neil Simone’s book about his life as an artist How Long Does It Take?.
Highly commended in the in the 9-12 category was Eva Aldous, 11, of St John’s Primary School, Knaresborough, with a collage of the Valley Gardens. Neil Simone said: “This is an interesting interpretation of the Valley Gardens. I like the way the path draws you into the picture.”
Louis Hollowed, five, also from St John’s Primary School, Knaresborough, was highly commended in the 5-8 category for his striking collage of a railway viaduct. Judge Peter Jesper said: 'It takes great planning skills to create a such a complex collage composition at five years old using so many elements of the environment.”
All the competition entrants will receive a certificate from Barber Titleys, North Park Road. All the finalists’ artwork is being exhibited at the firm’s offices and on a specially-created, on-line gallery on its website (www.barbertitleys.co.uk) throughout the summer.
Barber Titleys managing partner, Richard Davis, says: “We were very impressed with the high standard of entries and had difficulty in choosing 23 finalists. There is obviously a great deal of artistic talent among North Yorkshire school pupils. Our thanks go to all those who have supported the competition which has been great fun.”
